Cradle of Mankind

Akile African Adventure Location

The Cradle of Humankind, located northwest of Johannesburg

The Cradle of Humankind, located northwest of Johannesburg in South Africa’s Gauteng Province, is one of the world’s most important archaeological sites for understanding human evolution. Covering an area of approximately 50,000 acres, it contains a vast network of limestone caves that have yielded thousands of fossils of early hominids and extinct animals. These fossils date back over 2 million years, making it one of the richest fossil sites globally.
The site is particularly famous for the discovery of Australopithecus africanus fossils, including the well-known Mrs. Ples, which have provided critical insights into the development of early human ancestors. Another significant find was the 2015 discovery of Homo naledi, a previously unknown species of early human that exhibited a mix of primitive and modern traits.

Scientific research

The Cradle of Humankind also plays an important role in scientific research, with ongoing excavations and studies conducted by archaeologists from around the world. Visitors can explore the Sterkfontein Caves, Maropeng Visitor Centre, and Sterkfontein Caves Heritage Site, learning about human evolution through interactive exhibits and guided tours.

The area is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding contribution to understanding the origins of humanity and its preservation of invaluable fossils and sites.
